We talk about that there are four legs to the diabetes problem and this is the one we have not really covered that is very important and may be more influential in how it goes for you then the physical aspects you can see and influence. Anything your body perceives as dangerous to your survival can be considered "Stress". When our body determines our welfare is "threatened" our body gets ready to fight off and survive attacks or to make a run from danger as fast as possible.Even body chemicals are modified to slow bleeding in case we are wounded. These automatically triggered chemical and physiologic bodily reactions are called the "fight or flight" responses. Adrenaline and Caristol are produced which raise the body's blood sugar level (to run) our heart rate increases, our blood pressure rises, our respiration rate increases. Blood flow to our brain is lessened and immune functions and some digestion functions are shut down. Even blood flow to our brain is lessoned and we make dumb decisions under stress. Long term stress caused immune suppression can result in contracting major illnesses. Depression can be a stressor and happy positive or unusual events can be stressor such as a new experience with no prior experience on file. Winning the lottery would be a great stressor or some huge success or sudden popularity. A wedding, death of a relationship, loss of a family member, being cut off on the highway, fear of a new job, loss of job, damage to career etc. When things in your life go awry, take extra measurements of your blood glucose levels to learn the effects of this current stressor on your diabetes. What is going on in your life emotionally may have more affect on the diabetes progression and blood glucose levels for example then even your diet. Let us take as an example, you have an argument with your landlord or some silly thing and you are being threatened with having to leave where you are living. Let us say it is totally without any legitimate basis and you are terribly upset because of he whole misunderstanding life is not going well. That is an example of stress. Your body is getting this mental message but it does not know that it is not stress from a whole group of brown bears in the woods that are thinking of ganging up and attacking you. So your heart rate is up and your blood pressure is way up as a result of this stress. What you may not realize is that your blood glucose is now sky high and you can not figure out why, You never ate anything to make it go up like that? This combination of bad bodily reactions that happen automatically right along with emotional reactions to what is going on in your life. You can take steps to get this settled with your landlord, as it is affecting your health to let it go on. In addition you learn how to shut off these body alert alarm reactions nature has turned on because it perceived you as being in danger and needed to be ready to run or fight. This is learning how to negate the affect of stress and we wont get the job done in this issue, but do call it to your attention. We will be taking up on how you learn to deal with and handle the negative affect of stress on your diabetes progression and control. Just as you learn to control the affects of diet, you can learn how to get your body to disregard or at least not "over react" to stress in your life and make your diabetic condition and progression far worse then it needs to be.
